Reasons To Keep Your EV Charge Points Safe

Unexpected downtime is the last thing any business needs from its EV charge point(s). Reliable EV charging not only satisfies your staff and customers needs but also upholds your business’s reputation.

To achieve this electrical safety is paramount, so the carrying out of annual safety inspections that help identify such issues as wear and tear which if not addressed immediately can eventually lead to more serious things such as damaged internal components, loose wires, damaged cables, or possibly even heat damage.

By preventing these issues with proper maintenance and the replacement of any damaged components you will be keeping your charging infrastructure safe to use, reliable, and running efficiently, and by doing so ensuring uninterrupted service for your customers and staff.

Sadly, vandalism can also be a concern for EV charging locations. Enhance security can be achieved with lockable metal enclosures, for wall mounted chargers, plus surveillance cameras and good lighting to deter vandalism which we also offer. If installed the regular maintenance of these security features can also be a very important aspect in the overall maintenance and the health of the charge points as a whole.

What Does An EV Charge Point Health Check Entail?

As with any electrical installation EV charge point circuit(s) are required to be tested in accordance with the BS7671 regulations. The recommendation is that Inspection and Testing takes place every 12 months. Below is an Eight Point Health Check guideline showing what exactly is covered as part of our Inspection and Testing Health Check.

  1. Visual inspection of all charge points and tethered leads, where applicable.
  2. RCD test button Operation.
  3. Isolate the power to the charge point and remove the cover.
  4. Carry out electrical testing of the socket outlet or tethered lead.
  5. Operational check of the charge points display window where applicable.
  6. Charger physically cleaned.
  7. Check all cable terminations and inspect for any heat damage.
  8. Check the connectivity between the internet and the charger to confirm it is able to receive firmware updates.

Firmware updates are vital to ensure your EV charge points are compatible with all new EV vehicles allowing them to run efficiently and be secure from cyber threats. They will also fix performance related issues, improve reliability, provide advanced functionality and help extend the lifespan of the charge points and in doing so ensure a safe and seamless charging experience for all of your users.
